News regarding the chinese meat market situation.
First of all, let's take a brief review at the previous year.
Last year, according to data from
China's General Administration of Customs data, the Asian country imported a total of
9,38 million tonnes of meat, or
US$ 32 million, representing
an increase of 4.6% compared to the previous year.
In December, China announced that an imported meat consignee will not be required to
import meat products from 1 January 2022.
This would come into effect on January 1st, 2022.
For instance, large restaurants with multiple outlets, which previously could not import products directly from abroad, now can apply to import meat products.
Let´s not forget that the emergence of
African Swine Fever (ASF) in China in 2018 brought a radical change in trade.
China slaughtered 30% of its livestock in two years, which resulted in a
shortfall of 18 million tonnes of meat in 2020. So the 2021 numbers were very encouraging for the market.
